Chapter Six

Chapter 6—Kostas

“Enjoying your duck?” I asked my lunch date.

She smiled, pleasantly, from across the table. “Very much, thank you.”

We went on to exchange a few more pleasantries on this obligatory make Kostas Petrovich appear to be able to socialize normally in public date. This time it was with a woman named Dorrit Wassermann, who was, of all things, a very successful life coach.

“If you don’t mind my saying…” she started, putting down her fork, “you might be doing yourself a favor on future dates to make the appropriate amount of eye contact with the woman you’re with.”

“Oh?” I asked.

Dorrit had been if you don’t mind my saying… quite a bit on this date. It was starting to feel as though I were one of her clients in need of coaching as opposed to the man she was supposed to be on a date with herself. But that hardly mattered to me.

Still, I decided to indulge. “Am I making too little eye contact or too much?” I wondered.

“Too little,” she said. “I’m surprised you couldn’t sense that.”

I said nothing.

“Do you know what the appropriate amount of eye contact is, Kostas?” she asked.

“I have a feeling that you’re dying to tell me.”

She pursed her lips together at my rudeness. “Two-thirds of the time,” she spat out. “You want to convey interest in what your date is saying without appearing over-eager or aggressive. Two-thirds proved to be the magic ratio.”

“That’s very interesting.”

She smiled and took a sip of wine. I had to admit that while I felt absolutely no attraction toward this woman, I had learned a lot this afternoon. I had learned that on a first date, you were to avoid topics like family, religion, and politics like the plague. I disagreed, but Dorrit was insistent that it killed any chance of further intimacy if an argument occurred early. I’d also learned that presenting a woman with an orchid is a bold invitation for sex. Here I thought it was just a flower, but apparently, there was a secret language to petals and blooms that no one had taught me about.

I looked across the dining room to the bar where my new bodyguard sat. He had a clear view of the table and was eating lunch inconspicuously. I knew that I was to pretend that he wasn’t there, but it was difficult. Because he was there. Watching me. All the fucking time.

Rick, the bodyguard, ignored me as instructed.

“You keep eyeing the gentleman across the room, Kostas,” Dorrit pointed out.

“My apologies. I, um… I was admiring his jacket,” I stammered.

Dorrit pursed her lips again and made an amused little noise. “If you don’t mind my saying…” she said. “You and that gentleman might make a very handsome couple.”

I nearly choked on my drink. “Excuse me?”

“It finally makes sense. Why you’re so gruff and refuse any advances from women,” she said nodding. “Why you have such difficulty making a connection.”

“Dorrit, I’m not…”

“You’re gay,” she said. She grabbed my hand firmly like she was proud of me for finally living my truth or whatever.
